Task

This is an extensive project, and you will have all semester to complete it. You will decide on a species to help save, gather research on its habitat and ecosystem, collaborate as a team and synthesize your information and ideas to formulate a proposal for action. This action should reflect BIG thinking, but can be small in scale. (Remember what those little butterfly wings flapping could do). On Earth Day, your team will submit a 3-5 page written proposal that includes the following sections: Introduction, Knowledge, Analysis, Plan and Conclusion. Your team will then present this information in an audiovisual presentation for Mr. Moneybags, your principal, teachers and the student body.

As you make your way through this expedition, it will be important to contemplate and discuss the following key questions:

MONTH ONE:
GATHERING DATA
MONTH TWO:
APPLYING INFORMATION
MONTH THREE:
MAKING A PLAN:
  • What is your chosen species' natural habitat? ecosystem?
  • Is your chosen species an indicator species? If yes, for what other animals and wildlife? If no, what species is an indicator for this ecosystem?
  • What are the current threats to your chosen species? Which threats seem most pivotal to the species survival?
  • If extinction has always been an occurrence in nature, why would we as humans now have a responsibility to prevent
    current extinctions?
  • The United States is a capitalist society. Is it fair to expect businesses and corporations to sacrifice profit to conserve wildlife? (Remember to consider that a profitable company is better able to control cost of product and can employ more people).
  • What actions hold the most potential for a positive ripple effect? What hurdles might you encounter enacting these measures?
  • How can a "wildlife conserving" country persuade or coax other countries, that are not so inclined, to institute wildlife conservation measures? Should they be able to hold deficient countries accountable?
  • What incentives, education,or appeals can you provide to encourage cooperation and compliance? Will these be effective for those from whom you anticipate opposition?
  • How would your proposed action impact your species immediately? in 5 years? in 25 years?
  • How will your proposal impact your species ecosystem immediately? in 5 years? in 25 years?
  • Keep these questions and your discussions about them in mind as you move forward in your expedition.
